We’re Not Young AND Dumb : Cuffing Season : The Q4 Focus

People love to assume that youth automatically equals naivety. Society expects that because you are sixteen in high school or twenty in college, your heart is an open playground where anyone can leave their mess and call it “character building”. Then wonder why there are villianous-like women walking around with their walls up. Most likely, males built them with their heartless and intention-less actions; whether we dealt with them directly or learned to stay away from their type indirectly.

Let’s dismantle that narrative right now! We are not young and dumb. We are Black women who have clear vision and we carry pure standards. We are not letting the internet, celebrities, nor friends talk us into foolish love and we’re not letting some wolf in Prince Charming’s clothing end up shutting our whole summer down.

The “Cuffing Season” Trap: Winter Excuses and Low-Effort Habits

Welcome to October. The temperatures are dropping, the leaves are changing, and suddenly your phone starts lighting up with names you haven’t heard from since May/June.

Let’s call this season what it usually is: a low-effort trap. The culture calls it “cuffing season,” but for many young women, it’s just a setup for heartbreak, gaslighting, and brainwash humbling dressed in a seasonal hoodie. Guys love to use the cold weather as a convenient excuse for zero effort. Suddenly it’s “too cold to go out,” dates get replaced with endless “Netflix and chill” requests, and you find yourself pressured into playing wife or situationship partner to keep a warm body in the room.

They want the benefits of a dedicated partner without ever matriculating into a meaningful, committed, relationship. And watch the pattern: the minute the spring breeze hits and the summer sun pops out, that same man is suddenly “focusing on himself” and ready to run outside single.

Do not sign a seasonal lease on your heart. When you tell a man you don’t do low-effort dates, and you refuse to move like you’re in a physical situationship, watch how fast he tries to flip the script and make you feel like the problem. Stand flat-footed in your truth no matter how he looks nor what he has. A man who truly values your spirit won’t use winter as an excuse to treat you with low value.

Q4 Energy: Finish Strong, Not Sprung

October marks the start of the fourth quarter. In business, sports, and academia, Q4 is where championships are decided. It is where you lock in on your GPA, build your portfolio, prep for college/career applications or midterms, and set the financial foundation for the new year.

We need to finish 2026 strong and purposeful…not sprung, distracted, pregnant, nor derailed. Your focus is the most expensive thing you own right now. Don’t let someone’s temporary boredom become your permanent setback. Guard your time, guard your studies, guard your body and protect your space from seasonal freeloaders who have nothing to offer your future but to lock your summer down and try to tie themselves to you forever (and usually just to say they got you without actually wanting to have you). Think this paragraph is just a scare tactic? Ask yourself how many summer babies you know, especially in June, July, and August; nine months after September, October, and November. Ask yourself how many people you knew that were in relationships that suddenly split the moment the weather started being 72 degrees or more. It’s not a coincidence.

Grace for the Journey: Standards Never Expire

Now, let me say this with all the love and gentleness in my heart: this conversation is about focus, not shame. If you are a young woman who has become pregnant or is already parenting…all is not lost. Your story did not end, and your worth did not decrease; so don’t just throw your hands up on having standards.

You do not have to lower your standards or settle for a man with a field of red flags just because you carry life or have carried life. You are still not dumb, you still have a vision, and you are still worthy of pure, honorable love. Never let anyone convince you that motherhood means you have to accept the bare minimum or stay attached to chaos to prove you are worthy of love. You move with your head held high, protect your child’s peace by protecting your own, and hold the line for what real respect looks like.

The Closing Message

Sistahs, as the air turns crisp, let your discernment turn razor sharp. You are entering the final quarter of the year with your eyes wide open and your perimeter locked down tight. Use your time, your efforts, and your body wisely.

Stay feminine, stay focused, and remember: Your standards do not drop with the temperature. You are a Goddess who knows the value of her own presence, and your life is too valuable to be anyone’s seasonal placeholder. You’re just a woman, but the world is reshaped by the clarity of your focus.

With love,
