The Gilded Wallet : Financial Boundaries and Intentional Spending
I was looking at my bank statement today and realized that where we spend our money is just as much of a “vote” as the ballot we cast last month; shoutout to those who voted for Mary Sheffield.
Let’s have a real heart-to-heart about the climate we’re in. Between the current administration and the way so many major corporations have shown their true colors regarding DEI, we have to be smarter than ever with our resources. We’ve watched companies that once claimed to “stand with us” pull back their diversity goals, shutter their equity offices, and…in many cases…pour their profits from us directly into the platforms and politicians that actively work against our progress.
If these companies can be intentional about where they put their money, we have to be even more intentional about where we put ours. Feel me? Time to lock in more now than ever! Like Auntie Jenifer Lewis says…”We ain’t buying…ish!”
The Financial Pivot: Boundaries as Power
This holiday season, I want us to move away from the pressure of “performative gifting.” We often stretch our pockets thin trying to please everyone else, only to end the year feeling drained and starting the next year in the hole. A woman of excellence knows that her financial security is her best defense.
- Gift Giving to Self: Your primary investment this year should be you. Whether that’s padding your savings cushion, investing in a skill-building course, or buying that one item that actually supports your mental health; prioritize your own growth first. You don’t need to look “rich” for people who don’t even value your humanity.
- The “Soft No” on Group Gifting: You are allowed to say, “I’m not doing a big gift exchange this year.” Set those boundaries now. Your real friends and family will understand that you are preserving your finances to build your future, not just to survive the week. If they don’t then you know what to do, right?
- Invest in the Sisterhood: If you are going to spend, spend with Black women. Find a Black woman-owned business for your essentials and your treats. When we keep our money circulating in our own community, we build our own internal economy that no administration can touch. We have to be each other’s bank and each other’s safety net.
Ending the Year on Solid Ground Don’t let the holiday hype trick you into debt. The goal isn’t just to make it to January; it’s to walk into 2026 with your head high and your accounts intact. We aren’t spending the new year “crawling out” of anything. We are stepping into it with the power that comes from discipline and discernment.
Stay feminine, stay focused, and remember: Your currency is a reflection of your convictions. You are a Goddess who knows that financial boundaries are a form of self-respect, and your investment in yourself is a sacred act. You’re just a woman, but the world is reshaped by the wisdom of how you choose to build your empire.
With love,
