The Plan For The Motor City : Vote For Mary Sheffield

I was looking at the Detroit skyline this morning and realized that tomorrow isn’t just another Tuesday…it’s the day Detroiters decide who gets to hold the keys to our home. And some of ya’ll who aren’t Detroiters are doing the same decision process in your area somewhere in the world no matter the governmental level.

I want you to shake off the loss of former VP Kamala Harris. Shake off the stressful feeling of the reality we went to sleep and woke up to the last year.

Tomorrow morning, the heartbeat of Detroit changes, and as young women building our lives in this city, we have to be the ones leading that rhythm. I’ve spent a lot of time talking to you all about the importance of having high standards for ourselves, but that same excellence has to extend to the leadership we choose for our community. When I look at the future of Detroit, I see a clear path forward with Mary Sheffield. Someone I have seen since a child doing the work and who I believed in for a decade!

Currently, as our City Council President, she hasn’t just talked about the work; she has been in the trenches doing it and I can personally vouch for that. She has inspired me for over a decade with what she has done! For those of us navigating the early stages of our careers and/or our education, her leadership represents the “Scholar Goddess” energy we strive for every day.

Why the Vote Matters

It’s easy to get caught up in national politics, but local leadership is what actually touches your front door. Here is why I am standing with Mary Sheffield tomorrow:

  • A Track Record of Tenacity: Mary has spent her career fighting for housing justice and ensuring that “Detroiters First” isn’t just a slogan. She understands that for a city to truly rise, the people who have been holding it down through the hard years have to be the ones who benefit from the growth.
  • Empowering the Next Generation: Through her work with youth and her focus on community-led initiatives, she has consistently created space for young voices. She doesn’t just lead for us; she leads with us.
  • A Vision of Grace and Strength: Seeing a Black woman lead with such poise and unwavering commitment to her standards is exactly the kind of representation we need in the Mayor’s office. She represents a pinkprint of what is possible when you combine intellect with heart.

Our Turn at the Ballot

To my sisters in Detroit, especially those of you heading to the polls for the first or second time; this is our moment to be the architects of our city. We are a powerful voting bloc, and when we move together, the world has no choice but to shift.

And if you don’t live here, take these thoughts into the polls when you’re looking at the candidates that want your vote. Are they giving these types of things or these types of tangibles?

I want you to walk into that booth tomorrow with the confidence of a woman who knows her worth and the worth of her community. We aren’t just voting for a name; we are voting for a vision of a Detroit, or your location, that finally reflects the brilliance of the women who live here.

Stay feminine, stay focused, and remember: Your vote is the signature you leave on the future of your city. You are a Goddess who knows that true leadership is a sacred responsibility, and your participation is your power. You’re just a woman, but the city of Detroit is reshaped by the clarity of the choice you make.

With love,
